Montserrat is a British overseas territory in the Lesser Antilles. It is known as Emerald Isle of the Caribbean because of the high amount of Irish people who settled there and its resemblence to coastal Ireland. In 1995, the island's Soufriere Hills volcano erupted and covered the capital in ash. This eruption forced over half of the population off of the island. With the help of professional and semi-professional players from England with Montserratian heritage, the team has seen an upturn in fortunes after years at the foot of the FIFA rankings.
